What is Mathematical Modeling?
Mathematical modeling is the process of using mathematics to represent, analyze, and solve problems from the real world. It often has five phases:
- Understanding the problem: Determining the givens and goals
- Simplifying the problem: Identifying the necessary variables and making realistic assumptions
- Mathematizing: Constructing the needed mathematical models (e.g., equations, functions, graphs)
- Working mathematically: Achieving the correct mathematical solution by solving the constructed models
- Interpreting: Interpreting the obtained mathematical solution in a real-life context
- Validating: Validating and correcting any mistakes
